Some places feel wider than the map suggests. Doi Mon Jong is one of them: a mountain of golden grasslands, pine forests, cool winter air, and ridges that seem to run endlessly into northern Thailand’s wild horizon. Standing at 1,929 metres in Omkoi Wildlife Sanctuary, this trek is a short but vivid escape for hikers who want real mountain atmosphere without an extreme climb.
The journey starts from Chiang Mai, travelling south toward Omkoi before continuing by 4WD along narrow mountain roads. From the trailhead, you hike through pine forest, fern fields, open ridges, and rolling grasslands toward the famous Elephant Golf Course, a vast golden plateau surrounded by mountains. Along the way, the route passes Phu Hin Chor, a dramatic stone landmark, and Sam Hop Hill before reaching camp. In winter, red rhododendrons can brighten the slopes, while sunset at Lion’s Head Cliff and sunrise over mist-filled valleys bring the landscape to its most powerful moments.
Nights are spent in simple tent camping, with warm Thai-style meals, basic facilities, cold mountain air, and a sky full of stars. The trail is easy to moderate, suitable for fit beginners, active teens, and hikers who enjoy quiet nature. Come for the golden grasslands, stay for the sunrise, and let Doi Mon Jong show you how wild and peaceful Thailand’s mountains can be!
