Lemosho Crater Adventure Above the Clouds

After breakfast, the trail leaves the forest behind and climbs steadily into the heath and moorland zone, where vegetation thins and views open up. You’ll walk through rolling hills covered in heather and volcanic rock, with moss and lichens decorating the landscape.

As the trail ascends toward the Shira Ridge, you’ll enjoy your first clear views of Mount Kilimanjaro’s Kibo peak. The day ends with a gentle descent into Shira 1 Camp, set on the vast Shira Plateau — one of the world’s highest plateaus.

This day is dedicated to exploring the Shira Plateau, an expansive and otherworldly landscape of volcanic formations and open skies. You’ll hike eastward across moorland meadows to Shira 2 Camp, then veer north to Moir Hut, a remote and peaceful campsite at the base of the Lent Hills.

Upon arrival, those feeling strong can take a short acclimatization hike up Lent Hills, offering panoramic views across the plateau and toward the Western Breach. This extra walk aids your body’s adjustment to the increasing altitude.

Today brings a steady climb into the alpine desert, where the air thins and the terrain becomes stark and rocky. The path leads to the imposing Lava Tower, a 300-ft volcanic plug rising dramatically from the landscape.

Lunch is enjoyed here at 15,190 ft, providing valuable acclimatization before descending into the Barranco Valley. The descent offers stunning views of the giant groundsels and Senecio forests, unique to this altitude.

You’ll camp at Barranco Camp, one of the most scenic spots on the route, with towering cliffs and the majestic Breach Wall looming above.

After breakfast, the day starts with the exhilarating climb up the Great Barranco Wall — a steep but non-technical ascent that rewards you with breathtaking views at the top. Once over the wall, the route undulates through ridges and valleys, crossing alpine terrain under the open African sky.

A sharp descent into the Karanga Valley is followed by one final climb to reach Karanga Camp, perched high above the valley floor. This shorter day is crucial for rest and acclimatization, giving your body time to prepare for the demanding days ahead.

Today’s trek ascends gradually through rocky and wind-swept terrain, joining the Mweka Trail junction before continuing to Barafu Camp, the final stop before the summit push.

At this high camp, the temperature drops significantly, and the landscape becomes barren and dramatic. You’ll rest, hydrate, and enjoy an early dinner while your guides brief you for summit day. From here, both Mawenzi and Kibo peaks are visible — a motivating sight before the big ascent.

Summit day begins in the early morning daylight — a unique feature of this route. The slow, steady climb leads through loose volcanic scree, requiring determination and pacing. You’ll reach Stella Point (18,900 ft) on the crater rim, where the rising sun casts golden light across the glaciers.

A final push takes you to Uhuru Peak (19,341 ft) — the highest point in Africa. Celebrate your achievement, take photos, and absorb the vast 360° views before descending into the Kilimanjaro Crater for a truly exceptional overnight stay.

At Crater Camp, surrounded by shimmering ice walls and volcanic ash fields, you may opt for a short hike to the Reusch Crater and its 400-ft-deep ash pit. Sleeping at this altitude is both rare and demanding, so your guides will carefully monitor your condition.

After breakfast, you begin your long descent, retracing the route down past Barafu Camp where you’ll stop for lunch. The trail becomes rocky and steep, and trekking poles are recommended to reduce strain on your knees.

Eventually, the environment transitions from barren alpine desert back into lush forest. You’ll reach Mweka Camp, surrounded by trees and often shrouded in mist — the perfect setting for your final dinner on the mountain and a well-deserved rest.

Your final day on Kilimanjaro takes you through the verdant rainforest, where the trail can be slippery with mud and moss. Birdsong fills the air as you make your way down to Mweka Gate.

Here, you’ll sign out of the park and receive your official summit certificate, a lasting memento of your incredible achievement. After celebrating with your team, a vehicle will take you back to Moshi for a comfortable night at the Salinero Hotel, hot showers, and a celebratory dinner.
