Kilimanjaro: Machame Route in 7 Days

Awake to the crisp mountain air and a hearty breakfast before ascending out of the forest. The vegetation thins as you enter the moorland zone, where heather and giant lobelias dominate the landscape.
The path climbs a steep rocky ridge and crosses small streams before opening to the wide Shira Plateau, a vast expanse offering your first clear view of Kibo Peak.
As you reach Shira Camp, temperatures drop and stars fill the night sky — the first real sense of altitude begins here.

Today is a crucial acclimatization day. From Shira Plateau, continue eastward along a rocky ridge toward Lava Tower (4,650 m) — a volcanic formation known as the “Shark’s Tooth.” The climb to this altitude helps your body adjust.
After lunch at the tower, descend into the Barranco Valley, a beautiful oasis surrounded by giant senecios and lobelias. The descent helps your body adapt to changes in oxygen levels.
Arrive at Barranco Camp, set beneath the impressive Barranco Wall, where you’ll rest and prepare for the next day’s challenge.

After breakfast, tackle the Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical climb that rewards you with spectacular views of the Kibo Glacier. You’ll see your crew effortlessly scaling the wall with full loads — an inspiring sight.
At the top, take a moment to admire the panorama before descending into the Karanga Valley, crossing small ridges and streams. This shorter day allows for recovery and acclimatization, a perfect midpoint before the summit attempt.
Overnight at Karanga Camp, where you can enjoy a warm meal and prepare for the higher climb ahead.

Continue ascending along barren, rocky slopes toward Barafu Camp, the final staging ground for the summit. The word Barafu means “ice” in Swahili, and the name fits — the air is cold and dry.
You’ve now completed the Southern Circuit, with breathtaking views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. After an early dinner, rest and hydrate — tomorrow you’ll make your summit push.

Begin your summit ascent between midnight and 2:00 a.m., following switchback trails through loose scree and snow between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers.
As you reach Stella Point (5,739 m), pause for the most breathtaking sunrise over Africa. A final 1-hour push takes you to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on the continent — 5,895 meters above sea level.
Celebrate your incredible achievement, capture photos, and take in the sweeping 360° views before descending back to Barafu Camp for lunch, then continue to Mweka Camp for your final night on the mountain.

Enjoy your last breakfast on the mountain before making a gentle descent through the rainforest, alive with birdsong and rich vegetation. At Mweka Gate, collect your summit certificate and celebrate with your crew.
A short drive returns you to Moshi for a hot shower, a comfortable bed, and well-earned relaxation — the perfect end to your Kilimanjaro adventure.
