After breakfast, leave the rainforest behind and ascend into the heath and moorland zone. The trail opens up with wide mountain vistas and crosses rolling ridges toward the rim of the Shira Plateau.

Temperatures drop noticeably, and the vegetation becomes sparse, giving way to heather and volcanic rock formations. You’ll camp at Shira 1, surrounded by open skies and magnificent views of Mount Meru in the distance.

Today’s hike explores the Shira Plateau, a high-altitude expanse of ancient lava flow. It’s a gentle, steady walk east toward the snow-capped summit of Kibo, crossing grassy moorlands and volcanic ridges.

You’ll pause for lunch at Shira 2 Camp before continuing to Moir Hut, located at the base of the Lent Hills. Those with extra energy can take a short acclimatization hike up Lent Hills, enjoying panoramic views and aiding altitude adjustment.

The Moir area is remote and peaceful — ideal for stargazing in the clear, crisp mountain air.

This is a key acclimatization day. You’ll ascend from the moorlands to the alpine desert, following the trail toward the Lava Tower, a striking volcanic plug known as the “Shark’s Tooth.”

Lunch is served near Lava Tower at 15,250 ft, where you may feel the effects of altitude for the first time. Afterward, the route descends through lush valleys filled with giant groundsels and Senecios, leading to Barranco Camp.

Tonight’s campsite sits beneath the Breach Wall, with dramatic views of Kibo’s glaciers glowing above.

The day begins with the exciting climb up the Great Barranco Wall — a non-technical yet thrilling ascent that rewards you with spectacular panoramas at the top.

You’ll traverse several ridges and valleys, then descend into the Karanga Valley, crossing small streams before a final climb to Karanga Camp.

This shorter stage serves as a valuable acclimatization day, offering time to rest, hydrate, and enjoy the sweeping views of the Southern Glaciers above.

Leaving Karanga behind, you ascend steadily over barren, rocky terrain toward Barafu Camp, the final stop before the summit.

At this altitude, vegetation disappears, and the landscape becomes stark and icy. You’ll arrive early enough to rest, eat a hearty early dinner, and prepare for summit night.

From Barafu, you can see both Mawenzi Peak and Kibo, standing majestically against the setting sun — a perfect motivation for the climb ahead.

Summit day! The most challenging and rewarding part of your climb begins between midnight and 2:00 a.m..

You’ll ascend slowly between the Rebmann and Ratzel Glaciers, using a steady, rhythmic pace under a canopy of stars. The trail winds upward through loose scree to Stella Point (18,900 ft), where a breathtaking sunrise greets you.

From here, it’s a final one-hour push to Uhuru Peak (19,341 ft) — the Roof of Africa. Celebrate your incredible achievement, take photos, and soak in the 360° views of the glaciers and plains below.

Afterward, begin your long descent to Mweka Camp, stopping briefly at Barafu for lunch and rest. Trekking poles and gaiters are essential for the steep, loose terrain.

You’ll arrive at Mweka Camp (10,190 ft) for a well-earned rest and a final dinner with your team.

After breakfast and a farewell celebration with your mountain crew, you begin the final descent through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate.

Here, you’ll receive your official summit certificates, marking your successful Kilimanjaro climb. The descent can be wet, muddy, and slippery, so take your time and use your poles.

A vehicle will be waiting at Mweka Village to transfer you back to Moshi (about 30 minutes) for a hot shower, fresh clothes, and your victory dinner at the hotel.
