Route details
You will be picked up from Arusha Hotel at 8 AM and transported to Machame Village. In the village, you can purchase mineral water and will receive a packed lunch. From there, depending on the road conditions, you may either drive to the Machame gate or, if the road is muddy, you will need to walk approximately 3 km, which should take about an hour. After registering at the gate office, your ascent begins as you enter the rainforest almost immediately. Be prepared for potential rain in the forest, which can make the trail very wet, muddy, and slippery. You will have a lunch break about halfway through and are expected to reach the Machame camping area by late afternoon.
Your porters will arrive at the campsite well before you and will have set up your tent by the time you arrive. In the evening, they will boil water for drinking and washing while the cook prepares dinner, after which you can retire to your tent for the night. Please note that nighttime temperatures at this campsite can drop to freezing.
