Meru Ascent Adventure

We will depart from the hotel in Arusha and travel to Momela Gate (1500m / 4921ft).

After a brief registration at the gate, our trek will start with a fully armed ranger accompanying us. As we walk, we can expect to encounter various wildlife, including elephants, zebras, giraffes, monkeys, and antelopes, with elephants frequently spotted along the path. The walk will last approximately 5-6 hours.

We will have dinner and spend the night at Miriakamba Hut (2500m / 8202ft).

The trek from Miriakamba Hut to the saddle beneath Little Meru is brief but involves a steep ascent.

We'll take our time walking along the ridge, enjoying stunning views of the Meru Crater and the remarkable Ash Cone, which will take us about 3-5 hours.

After a warm lunch at Saddle Hut, we can embark on a short climb to the summit of Little Meru (3820m / 12533ft) to catch breathtaking views just before sunset.

We'll have dinner and spend the night at Saddle Hut (3500m / 11483ft).

We begin our ascent early, around 1:30 a.m., as we make our way steeply to Rhino Point at 3,800 meters (12,467 feet). We aim to reach the summit at 4,566 meters (14,980 feet) just in time for sunrise, where there’s a chance to see Kilimanjaro Peak peeking above the clouds.

The last stretch of the climb takes us along a breathtaking narrow ridge between the steep inner cliffs and the gently sloping outer wall of the crater. After a brief rest and brunch at Saddle Hut, we proceed with our descent to Miriakamba Hut. The journey from Saddle Hut to the summit and then down to Miriakamba Hut typically takes 10 to 12 hours of walking.

We will make a quick descent through open grasslands and mixed forests, where there’s a chance to spot some wildlife, before arriving at Momella Gate in the late morning.

A transfer back to Arusha will be waiting for us at Momella Gate.

The hike from Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate takes about 2-3 hours.
