Shira Wilderness Summit

Today is an easier acclimatization day across the scenic Shira Plateau, one of the oldest volcanic calderas on Kilimanjaro. The route passes grassy moorlands, lava formations, and giant volcanic rock outcrops while offering spectacular views of the mountain and surrounding plains. During the walk, visit Shira Cathedral, a dramatic rock formation rising above the plateau. The peaceful atmosphere and remote landscapes make this one of the most beautiful sections of the route. Continue gradually to Shira 2 Camp (3,840 m) where, on clear days, excellent views of Mount Meru can be seen in the distance.

After breakfast, continue eastward toward the famous Lava Tower, passing through alpine desert landscapes with sparse vegetation and dramatic volcanic scenery. This stage is important for acclimatization as the trail climbs to higher altitude before descending again. The changing terrain provides magnificent views of Kilimanjaro’s glaciers and rocky slopes. After reaching the Lava Tower area, descend gradually into the spectacular Barranco Valley, famous for its giant senecio plants and steep cliffs. Arrive at Barranco Camp for dinner and overnight beneath the imposing Barranco Wall.

Begin the day by climbing the famous Great Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical ascent that offers some of the most rewarding views on the mountain. From the top, the route traverses rocky ridges and valleys with continuous panoramas of glaciers and distant plains below. The trail then descends into the scenic Karanga Valley, an important acclimatization stop along the Southern Circuit. The shorter trekking day allows time to rest and recover while enjoying the dramatic alpine surroundings. Dinner and overnight at Karanga Camp.

After breakfast, continue the steady climb toward Barafu Camp (4,600 m) through barren alpine desert terrain. Vegetation becomes increasingly sparse as the route approaches the high mountain zone. Along the way, enjoy striking views of the summit cone, glaciers, and the rugged southern slopes of Kilimanjaro. Arrive at Barafu Camp in the afternoon with time to rest, organize summit gear, and prepare for the challenging overnight ascent. An early dinner is served before a few hours of sleep ahead of summit night.

Around midnight, begin the final ascent toward Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) under a sky filled with stars. The climb is physically demanding, following steep scree slopes and icy paths toward the crater rim. Reaching the summit at sunrise is an unforgettable moment, with breathtaking views above the clouds and across the glaciers of Kilimanjaro. After celebrating at the highest point in Africa, descend carefully back to Barafu Camp for a short rest and breakfast before continuing down through rocky terrain and moorland toward Mweka Camp. This is the longest and most challenging day of the expedition, combining both the summit ascent and major descent.

After breakfast, continue descending through the lush rainforest zone toward Mweka Gate. The lower slopes are rich in vegetation, birdlife, and changing scenery after several days in alpine environments.

Upon arrival at the gate, receive your summit certificates and meet the transfer vehicle for the drive back to Arusha. The journey concludes with unforgettable memories of reaching the roof of Africa through one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic and remote routes.
