Kilimanjaro Scenic Challenge - Machame

After breakfast, leave the rainforest behind and enter the dramatic moorland zone. The trail climbs steadily along rocky ridges and open landscapes filled with giant heather and volcanic rock formations. As the vegetation changes, breathtaking views of Mount Meru and the Shira Plateau begin to appear. The route crosses small valleys and ridges before reaching the expansive Shira Camp, located on one of Kilimanjaro’s oldest volcanic plateaus. The afternoon is spent relaxing, acclimatizing, and enjoying panoramic mountain scenery before dinner and overnight at camp.

Today is one of the most important acclimatization days of the trek. From the Shira Plateau, continue eastward toward the impressive Lava Tower, a dramatic volcanic rock formation known as the “Shark’s Tooth.” The route climbs gradually into alpine desert terrain, where the air becomes thinner and the landscape increasingly rugged. Picnic lunch is served along the trail while surrounded by spectacular mountain scenery. After reaching higher altitude near Lava Tower, descend to Barranco Camp, allowing the body to acclimatize more effectively. The camp sits beneath the towering Barranco Wall with stunning views of glaciers and valleys, creating one of the most scenic overnight stops on the mountain.

After breakfast, begin the day with the exciting climb up the famous Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical section offering incredible views over the surrounding valleys. The trail then descends into the Karanga Valley before continuing through rocky alpine desert terrain toward Barafu Camp. Along the way, enjoy spectacular views of both Kibo and Mawenzi Peaks while completing the scenic Southern Circuit of Kilimanjaro. Upon arrival at Barafu Camp, rest and prepare for the summit attempt. An early dinner is served before a few hours of sleep ahead of the midnight ascent to Uhuru Peak.

Around midnight, begin the challenging summit climb under a sky filled with stars. The ascent follows steep scree slopes between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers toward Stella Point on the crater rim. This demanding section requires determination and steady pacing, but the reward is extraordinary. As dawn approaches, witness a breathtaking sunrise over Africa from high above the clouds. Continue the final stretch to Uhuru Peak (19,345 ft), the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the African continent. After photographs and celebration at the summit, begin the long descent back to Barafu Camp for a short rest and lunch before continuing down to Mweka Camp for dinner and overnight stay.

After breakfast, continue descending through the lush rainforest toward Mweka Gate. The lower trail can be wet and muddy, but the rich vegetation and cooler air provide a refreshing end to the climb. Upon arrival at the gate, receive your summit certificate and celebrate the successful completion of your Kilimanjaro adventure. A vehicle will then transfer you back to your hotel in Arusha, where you can relax and reflect on the unforgettable experience of climbing Africa’s highest mountain.
