Classic Machame Route Kilimanjaro Trek

Depart around 8:00 AM for Machame Gate where registration formalities are completed before starting the trek.

The trail climbs steadily through dense rainforest filled with colobus monkeys, exotic birds, giant trees, and mist-covered trails.

Reach Machame Camp, located just above the forest zone with beautiful views toward Shira Ridge and Uhuru Peak.

• Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
• Habitat: Moorland

After breakfast, continue climbing through heather and moorland landscapes with spectacular views of the Western Breach and glaciers near Uhuru Peak.

The trail passes volcanic rocks, giant lobelias, and senecio plants before reaching Shira Camp on the Shira Plateau.

• Habitat: Alpine Desert

Today’s trek includes a gradual ascent toward Lava Tower (15,000 ft / 4,600 m), an important acclimatization point.

After lunch near Lava Tower, descend into the spectacular Great Barranco Valley, surrounded by giant senecio plants and dramatic cliffs.

Barranco Camp sits beneath the impressive Kibo Massif and hanging glaciers.

• Elevation: 12,950 ft / 3,950 m to 15,200 ft / 4,630 m
• Hiking Time: 7–8 hours
• Habitat: Alpine Desert

Begin the day with the famous climb up the Barranco Wall, one of the most exciting sections of the route.

Continue trekking through the Karanga Valley before ascending toward Barafu Camp, the final base camp before summit night.

Rest, hydrate, and prepare for the midnight summit attempt.

• Elevation: 15,200 ft / 4,630 m to 19,340 ft / 5,895 m then down to 10,200 ft / 3,110 m
• Hiking Time: 12–17 hours
• Habitat: Arctic & Rain Forest

Shortly after midnight, begin the challenging summit ascent toward Stella Point and finally Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

This is the most demanding stage of the trek, with freezing temperatures, steep scree slopes, and high altitude.

Watch sunrise over Mawenzi Peak before reaching the summit.

After celebrating your achievement, descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest and continue to Mweka Camp.

• Hiking Time: 2–3 hours
• Habitat: Rain Forest

Descend through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you receive your Kilimanjaro summit certificates.

Transfer back to your hotel for relaxation and celebration after completing your climb.

Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

After breakfast, transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your departure flight.
