Ultimate Kilimanjaro Northern Circuit

After breakfast, depart from the hotel and drive approximately four hours to Lemosho Gate on the western side of Kilimanjaro. After completing park registration, begin trekking through dense rainforest filled with tropical vegetation, giant trees, and possible wildlife sightings. The trail is gentle but can be muddy and slippery, especially after rain. Your guide will introduce the local flora, fauna, and mountain environment along the way. Arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp for dinner and overnight surrounded by forest scenery.

Today the trail leaves the rainforest behind and enters the beautiful moorland zone. Trek through open landscapes covered in giant heather, volcanic rock, and alpine vegetation as you ascend onto the vast Shira Plateau. The route is gradual and scenic, offering increasingly spectacular views across Kilimanjaro’s western slopes. Arrive at Shira 1 Camp (3,504 m) in the afternoon for dinner and overnight.

Continue eastward across the plateau through the famous Garden of the Senecios, a surreal landscape of giant alpine plants and volcanic terrain. The trail gradually climbs toward the dramatic Lava Tower (4,600 m) and the iconic Shark’s Tooth rock formation where lunch is served. This high-altitude section is extremely important for acclimatization before descending toward the quieter northern slopes. Continue down to Moir Camp (4,161 m) for dinner and overnight surrounded by rugged alpine scenery.

Begin with a moderately steep climb out of the Moir Valley before traversing the remote northern side of Kilimanjaro. Optional acclimatization hikes toward Little Lent Hill (4,375 m) provide additional panoramic views across the mountain. The trail continues through a series of rolling ridges and valleys with spectacular vistas stretching toward the Kenyan and Tanzanian plains. Arrive at Buffalo Camp (4,033 m) in the early afternoon with time to rest and enjoy the peaceful wilderness atmosphere.

Today’s route crosses the rugged Buffalo Ridge before descending gently toward Pofu Camp, where lunch is usually served. Continue trekking east around the northern slopes of Kibo toward the Rongai Third Cave area. By now, the gradual acclimatization process allows most trekkers to feel comfortable at altitude. The shorter trekking day provides additional time to rest before the final summit approach. Dinner and overnight at camp.

Continue ascending steadily across the barren alpine landscape known as The Saddle, located between the peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi. The terrain becomes increasingly stark and dramatic as the route approaches School Hut (4,717 m), the final camp before the summit push. After an early dinner, guides provide a detailed briefing for summit night. Rest early and prepare all warm clothing, headlamps, snacks, and summit equipment ahead of the midnight ascent.

Shortly before midnight, wake for hot tea and snacks before beginning the final ascent toward Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). The climb follows steep scree slopes beneath the stars toward Gilman’s Point (5,681 m) on the crater rim. As dawn approaches, enjoy unforgettable sunrise views across the glaciers and surrounding plains. Continue along the crater rim to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating at the summit, descend carefully to Barafu Camp for a short rest and lunch before continuing down to Millennium Camp for your final night on the mountain.

After breakfast, enjoy a farewell ceremony with the mountain crew before beginning the final descent through lush rainforest trails toward Mweka Gate. Upon arrival, receive your summit certificates and celebrate the successful completion of your Kilimanjaro expedition. A transfer vehicle will then drive you back to Tulia Retreat Hotel and Spa for a well-deserved hot shower, dinner, and overnight stay.

After breakfast, transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward flight. End of services.
