The first light over Aoraki paints the ridges of Mount Dixon in gold — sharp snow lines, deep shadows, and air so thin it hums. Tucked high in the Southern Alps, Mount Dixon is both a proving ground and a summit worthy of respect on its own. Here, skill, patience, and precision come together on one of New Zealand’s most striking alpine climbs.

Your journey begins in Wānaka, with a short flight carrying you deep into Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park. From the comfort of Plateau Hut, the days unfold around weather, practice, and preparation. Rope drills on the ridge, the crunch of crampons on the glacier, and the quiet build-up to the climb itself — an early 2:00am start under the stars, crossing the Grand Plateau and ascending steep snow couloirs as the Tasman Valley awakens below.

Accessible yet demanding, Mount Dixon offers a perfect balance of challenge and reward. Travel by helicopter, stay among glaciers, and experience the exhilaration of a real alpine ascent — join us and stand where dawn meets the Southern Alps!

Route details

Day 1
Arrival and Preparation

Arrive at our Wānaka office at 8:00am to meet your guide, check your gear, and review the weather forecast. Any last-minute equipment is organised before beginning the 2.5-hour drive to Mount Cook Airport. You can safely leave any luggage or valuables at the office before departure.

At Mount Cook Airport — a small airstrip on the eastern side of Aoraki/Mount Cook — we load the helicopter for a breathtaking 15-minute flight to Plateau Hut at 2,200m. Weather can occasionally delay the flight, so extra time may be used for rope training and technical practice at Unwin Hut in Mount Cook Valley.
