The mountains rise like a promise above the Makarora Valley — sharp, silent, and impossibly bright. Climbing Mt Brewster isn’t about conquering a peak, it’s about earning every step, every breath, as you move deeper into New Zealand’s alpine heart. From the first crossing of the Haast River to the final ridge leading skyward, each moment feels raw, real, and alive.

Your journey begins with a steep hike through beech forest to Brewster Hut, where the air grows thin and the view opens to ice and light. From here, the path leads over rugged rock and onto the glacier itself. With your guide leading the way, you’ll rope up and climb toward the summit — 2,516 m above the world — where the Southern Alps reveal their true beauty and power. Nights are spent beneath vast skies, with campfires, shared meals, and the quiet rhythm of mountain life.

Accessible yet demanding, this climb offers a true taste of New Zealand mountaineering — self-reliant, beautiful, and unforgettable. Join us on the ridgeline and stand where earth meets sky!

Route details

Day 1
Into the Mountains

This plan is a sample only and may change depending on weather or other conditions. Please use it as a guide.

Meet your guide in Wānaka at 8:00 a.m. for a trip briefing and gear check before setting off toward Fantail Falls. From there, the real adventure begins — a steep 2.7 km climb with nearly 1000 m of elevation gain leading up to Brewster Hut. After the effort of the ascent, enjoy a well-earned lunch on the deck, gazing across to the gleaming face of Mount Brewster.

In the afternoon, continue higher to the turquoise glacial lakes beneath Brewster Glacier — your campsite for the night. Settle in, share a warm meal, and let the mountains fall silent around you before tomorrow’s summit push.
