Above Above Phayao Lake, the mountains rise like a dark green wall — ridges, pine forest, bamboo, and sacred summits waiting beyond the first climb. This trek to Doi Luang Phayao is a short but strong mountain journey for hikers who want effort, meaning, and wide northern views without stepping into a polished comfort trip.
The trail begins with a local market breakfast before heading into the highlands from Wang Nuea Viewpoint. You cross grasslands, bamboo groves, and pine forest, then move onto San Mu Dong Ridge, where the path becomes steep, narrow, and exposed. The final climb follows the “Stairway to the Sky” to the summit of Doi Luang Phayao, with sunset and stargazing above the lake. The next day leads toward Doi Nok, passing rope-assisted rocky sections before reaching sacred Buddha relics and statues, then continuing to Phra Than Jai for sunset and a special dinner prepared in the wild.
Camping is simple, with basic mountain facilities, cold nights, and no showers or signal at most campsites. Meals are Thai-style, warm, and practical for the trail. Come ready for steep climbs, sacred ridgelines, and nights above Phayao Lake — this is the kind of trek that stays in your legs, your memory, and your sense of wonder!
