Mist hangs low over Fiordland’s mountains, wrapping the peaks in silence. Somewhere beyond the clouds, Mount Tutoko rises — sharp, wild, and completely on its own. This is not a mountain you visit — it’s the one you earn, step by step, in a place where time feels frozen and the landscape rules everything.

The journey begins in Wānaka, where a short flight takes you into the pristine beauty of the Darran Mountains. Your first days are spent climbing the perfect granite near Turner’s Biv and waiting for the right break in the weather — patience is part of the adventure here. When the skies open, the real climb begins: two long days of rock, snow, and ice leading to the highest point in Fiordland. Nights are spent bivvying high above the valley, surrounded by wind, stars, and the quiet hum of the mountain itself.

This is a climb for those who want to feel small beneath something immense, who crave challenge and silence in equal measure. Travel by helicopter, camp in the wild, and stand where few have ever stood — on the summit of Mount Tutoko. Join us on Mount Tutoko — where the climb begins with patience, unfolds in challenge, and ends above the clouds!

Route details

Day 1
Arrival and Flight to Fiordland

This is a sample itinerary and can change due to weather and other unforeseen circumstances. Please use it as a guide.

Arrive at our Wānaka office at 8:00am to meet your guide for a gear check and weather briefing. Any last-minute items or equipment are organized before the drive to the helicopter staging area. You can leave any extra gear or valuables safely at the office.

From there, take a scenic heli flight to Turner’s Biv on the edge of the Darran Mountains. As Fiordland is one of the wettest regions on Earth, weather delays are sometimes unavoidable — but once the skies clear, the views are spectacular.
