Route details

Discover Santo Antão’s most iconic hiking trail on a guided 3–3.5-hour walk from Cova Natural Park to the lush Paúl Valley. After pickup from your accommodation, travel through the mountains to the vast crater of Cova de Paúl—Cape Verde’s largest extinct volcano. From its rim, enjoy sweeping views over the fertile crater floor and the dramatic green valley stretching toward the ocean.

Begin your descent along the famous zigzag path, taking in panoramic landscapes while learning about the island’s native flora and fauna. As you make your way down, pass sugarcane, banana, mango, avocado, coconut, and other tropical plantations, as well as old vineyard terraces.

At the end of your hike, visit a traditional distillery to see how local rum is produced and sample the renowned grogue (rum-making season runs from January 1 to May 31). Finally, return by car through scenic villages such as Sinagoga, Vila das Pombas, and Janela before being dropped off at your accommodation.
