Some landscapes feel less like places and more like stories carved into stone. The Dachstein massif, crowned at 2,995 meters, has shaped not only valleys and glaciers but also centuries of life in the Salzkammergut. Here, alpine pastures still whisper of medieval farmers, while crystal-clear lakes mirror the grandeur of peaks once seen as insurmountable. Hiking through this UNESCO World Heritage region is a journey through both natural wonder and living history.
Your path begins high above Gröbming, with sweeping views from the Steinerhaus, then carries you into the mysterious Notgasse gorge where centuries-old rock carvings hide in shadow. Alpine villages welcome you with local specialties, while trails wind past larch forests, hidden springs, and serene moorland lakes. From the lonely Kemet Mountains to the vibrant spa town of Bad Aussee, each step brings new contrasts—wild ridges, cultural treasures, and moments of silence broken only by the sound of your boots on stone.
Luggage transfers make the journey light, while overnights in alpine huts and mountain inns place you in the heart of nature. Join us on this crossing of the Dachstein’s eastern flanks and let the region’s beauty, both rugged and tender, unfold with every mile!

Route details
Your journey begins in Gröbming, Eastern Styria. From here, the ascent (organized for train travelers) takes you along Styria’s highest alpine road to the uniquely perched Steinerhaus at 1,845 m on the Stoderzinken.
This mountain inn is not only a breathtaking lookout point but also the perfect base for alpine adventures, such as a walk to the nearby Friedenskircherl. From the terrace and your room, enjoy the magic of the mountain panorama, especially during the soft glow of the evening’s “blue hour.”
