Route details

Day 1
Start of the Great Glen

The program description is subject to changes.

From Inverness:

We will go on the barge at 14:00 (2 PM) today. After getting acquainted with the crew and other guests, we'll stroll to Clachnaharry Sea Lock, the easternmost point of the Caledonian Canal, to begin our journey across the country. This canal, built in the early 19th century, links Scotland's east coast from Inverness to Fort William.

This afternoon, we'll follow the barge to Dochgarroch, a charming village situated on Loch Dochfour, where we will spend the night. The walk will take us along the towpath with the Caledonian Canal on our right and the River Ness on our left. The distance is 7 miles (11 km) with an elevation gain of 15 meters (49 feet).

From Banavie (Fort William):

We will board the barge today at 2:00 PM and, after meeting the crew and fellow guests, we will take a taxi or minibus to Corpach, the westernmost point of the Caledonian Canal, to begin our first hike of the week. This canal, built in the early 19th century, links the east coast of Scotland from Fort William to Inverness. Today's hike will follow the canal towpath, offering stunning views of Ben Nevis, Scotland's tallest mountain at 1,345 meters (4,413 feet), as we make our way to Gairlochy, a small village on the southern shore of Loch Lochy, where the barge will dock for the night. The distance is 8 miles (13 km) with an elevation gain of less than 20 meters (65 feet).

Our Barge

The vessel for your journey has been offering successful cruises since 1996. Measuring 39 meters in length, it can accommodate 12 passengers along with six crew members. The barge features seven steep steps leading from the deck to the boat at both ends, equipped with sturdy handrails. The crew is experienced in assisting guests with these steps; however, the boat is not wheelchair accessible.

When anchored, a smaller RIB support boat is used for transportation to and from the shore, accessed via a short ladder leading up to the deck. Inside the boat, there is a single step at each end of the cabin passage, as well as additional steps leading up to the en-suite and shower facilities.

You will stay in a twin en-suite cabin featuring excellent power showers. As you journey through your exploration, your accommodation will shift to a new location each day. There are six en-suite cabins, each with a spacious lower berth measuring three feet and six inches and a standard upper berth of two feet and six inches.

All berths are six feet and three inches long, equipped with underfloor heating, heated towel rails, ample storage, and large opening windows. Bed linens and towels are supplied, and there is an abundance of hot water with powerful showers available. Additionally, there is a laundry/drying room on board; please inform the crew if you wish to use the washing machine.
