From Inverness:
We will board the barge at 2 PM today. After meeting the crew and other guests, we'll take a very leisurely walk to Clachnaharry Sea Lock, the easternmost point of the Caledonian Canal, to kick off our journey across the country. This canal, constructed in the early 19th century, connects Scotland's east coast from Inverness to Fort William.
This afternoon, we’ll follow the barge to Dochgarroch, a lovely village located on Loch Dochfour, where we will spend the night. Our walk will take us along the towpath with the Caledonian Canal on our right and the River Ness on our left. The distance is 7 miles (11 km) with an elevation gain of 15 meters (49 feet).
From Banavie (Fort William):
Today at 2:00 PM, we will board the barge and, after meeting the crew and other guests, we will take a taxi or minibus to Corpach, the westernmost point of the Caledonian Canal, to kick off our first hike of the week. This canal, constructed in the early 19th century, connects Scotland's east coast from Fort William to Inverness. Our hike today will follow the canal towpath, providing breathtaking views of Ben Nevis, Scotland’s highest peak at 1,345 meters (4,413 feet), as we journey to Gairlochy, a small village on the southern edge of Loch Lochy, where the barge will stay overnight. The hike covers a distance of 8 miles (13 km) with an elevation gain of under 20 meters (65 feet).
