Dachstein Trails: A Gourmet Journey on Foot

Your hike begins from Filzmoos, ascending over the Marcheggsattel and through dense mountain forest to the Wiesenhöhe viewpoint. Here, sweeping views open toward the Aualm in the Fritzbach valley, the Hofalmen pastures, and the serene Almsee lake. Beneath the jagged ridges of the Bischofsmütze, you’ll reach the Hofpürgl Hut at 1,705 meters, complete with a panoramic terrace for well-earned rest.

Today the trail takes you into a world of dramatic limestone formations. Following the Salzburger Almenweg, you cross the open pasture of the Rinderfeld, where scattered boulders and a sparkling mountain stream create a surreal alpine scene. The route then climbs to the “Tor,” the stage’s highest point, marking the border between Salzburg and Styria. From here, the path winds directly beneath the sheer walls of Torstein, Mitterspitz, and the mighty Hoher Dachstein. Your day ends at the Dachstein Südwand Hut, perched like an eagle’s nest beneath the massif’s towering cliffs.

From the Dachstein Südwand Hut, the trail follows the Pernerweg down into the Maralm pastures. Continue along the Salzburger Almenweg to Bachlalm, where tame marmots often appear right by the path. The hike offers breathtaking views of the 2,247-meter Rötelstein, then carries you across the open slopes of the Nößlerriedel. Crossing larch forests and small mountain streams, you descend into the Hammerbach valley before reaching Filzmoos. From here, depart individually or extend your stay for more alpine discoveries.
