Bay of Fires Off Season Adventure

Our second day offers flexibility and richness, with the route chosen by your guides based on weather and group preferences. Possible options are:

1) Eddystone Point to Ansons Bay (10 km, 4-5 hours walking, moderate)
We begin at larapuna / Eddystone Point, home to a striking granite lighthouse built in 1889. This area holds cultural significance for both Aboriginal and European Tasmanians, and we’ll spend time exploring the historic and natural highlights here.

Leaving the point, we walk along vast, dune-backed beaches often teeming with birdlife. It’s common to see gulls, terns, and albatross, as well as migratory birds like ruddy turnstones and shearwaters. We’ll pass through scenic coves and shell-filled beaches, perfect for a dip if you're feeling brave. Interesting granite rock formations await along the way before finishing the walk at Ansons Bay, where we wade a narrow lagoon channel to meet our bus.

2) Humbug Point Loop (10 km, 4 hours walking, easy to moderate)

Alternatively, we might explore the Humbug Point loop — a lesser-known trail winding through Xanthorrhoea grass trees, sclerophyll forest, and diverse coastal habitats. Beginning at Moulting Bay, we trace the beach towards Georges Bay, taking in views of the St. Helens Oyster farms and nearby reserves. Climbing higher, we move into woodland areas rich in birdlife and ocean views peeking through tall trees. A scenic lunch stop allows us to pause and soak up the peaceful surroundings.

3) St. Columba Falls, Weldborough Rainforest walk, Halls Falls, Pynegana Dairy, Giant Tree walk
(9 km, 4 hours walking, easy to moderate)
This option is a series of short walks through lush rainforest and past waterfalls. We begin with a drive along Tasmania’s quiet east coast roads, stopping first in a temperate rainforest filled with giant ferns and endemic species like sassafras and Nothofagus.

Next, we visit the Giant Tree Walk, winding through bushland to one of Tasmania’s tallest eucalypts — a 60-meter giant ash with a 19.4-meter girth, home to rare birds and mammals. In Tasmania’s fertile dairy country, we stop at Pyengana Dairy for a coffee and cheese tasting, before continuing to St. Columba Falls — the second-highest in the state at 90 meters. A short walk through rainforest brings us close to the powerful cascade. If time permits, we may also visit Halls Falls, the Pub in the Paddock, or the quirky Shop in the Bush.

Tonight’s dinner includes pre-dinner nibbles and another delightful two-course meal prepared by your guides.

After breakfast and packing up, we drive through Gladstone to Little Blue Lake, where our final walk begins. This trail leads along the southern slopes of Mt. Cameron to Cube Rock — a massive granite boulder balanced atop Windy Ridge, formed over 380 million years ago.

This moderate hike offers spectacular 360-degree views and a strong connection to the area’s Indigenous heritage. Keep an eye out for Bennetts wallabies and unusual granite shapes that inspire imagination.
After lunch and a gentle return to the bus, we begin the journey back to Launceston. On the way, we pass through Derby, Tasmania’s mountain biking capital, and Scottsdale, famous for its Pink Eye potatoes. We’ll stop in the Lilydale wine region for a tasting of local wines before returning to the city and saying farewell.
