Mount Ol Doinyo Lengai, rising 9,442 feet above the Great Rift Valley in Northern Tanzania, is the only active carbonatite volcano in the world. Its unique white lava, which transforms rapidly when exposed to air, holds deep cultural meaning for the Maasai, symbolizing the white beards of the god “Enkai.”
Though the trek demands endurance and determination, it requires no technical climbing skills. From the summit, visitors can admire fresh lava cones and breathtaking views of the surrounding plains. Despite frequent eruptions, no casualties have ever been recorded, as the lava remains unusually cool compared to other volcanoes.
After conquering the mountain, explorers can unwind at Lake Natron, a vast alkaline lake famed for its flamingos and rich birdlife, and enjoy guided walking safaris spotting zebras, giraffes, and elephants in the Ngare-Sero and Engaruka areas.
