The Marangu Route, famously called the “Coca-Cola Route,” is the oldest and most established path to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Unique among all routes, Marangu offers dormitory-style sleeping huts rather than tents, featuring bunk beds (60 at Mandara and Kibo Huts, 120 at Horombo Hut), mattresses and pillows provided. Huts include communal dining areas and basic washrooms—from flushing toilets and running water at lower elevations to long-drop toilets at Kibo Hut.
Known for its gentle slope and direct path, the Marangu Route is often considered the easiest way up Kilimanjaro. However, its shorter itinerary limits acclimatization time, making altitude sickness a concern. The trail approaches from the southeast and follows the same path for ascent and descent, which makes it less scenic but more popular and crowded.
