The Routeburn feels like a trail carved between worlds — one moment you’re walking through quiet beech forest, and the next you’re stepping out to wide, glacial valleys that seem to stretch forever. This full-day walk lets you settle into that rhythm, following rivers, waterfalls, and ancient alpine landscapes that have shaped stories for centuries.

You’ll wander past mossy gorges, cross a swing bridge into a forest alive with birdsong, and gradually climb toward snow-dusted peaks with your guide sharing the track’s natural and cultural history along the way. Lunch is provided, the pace is steady, and there are plenty of places to pause and take it all in.

If you want a day that feels both grounding and thrilling, join us on one of New Zealand’s most iconic trails!

Route details

The pick up point is from Queenstown at 8:00 AM and we take you on a scenic trip along the Queenstown–Glenorchy Road, following the edge of Lake Wakatipu. After passing through Glenorchy, the drive continues toward Paradise, and from there we enter Mt Aspiring National Park to begin the famous Routeburn Track.

You’ll start the walk by crossing a swing bridge and stepping into a beautiful beech forest. The trail here is wide and easy, giving you time to watch for native birds. With a bit of luck, you might spot the Mohua (yellowhead), which usually moves in small groups, along with bush robins and New Zealand’s tiniest bird, the Rifleman.

The path then follows the Routeburn River as it crashes through a dramatic gorge and disappears under giant boulders. The climb is steady and gentle, taking you through ancient forest filled with mosses, ferns, lichens and beech trees that have been part of this landscape for more than 130 million years. Along the way, your guide will talk about the track’s Māori and European history. You’ll see numerous waterfalls and plenty of peaceful spots where you can rest beside the river. The pace is moderate, gradually leading you toward impressive snow-covered peaks.

The aim is to reach the Falls Hut which is a 1 hour steep incline from the Falls Hut so moderate fitness is required.

We recommend wearing sturdy walking shoes and warm clothing at any time of year. This is an all-weather activity — rain jackets can be provided. Tours run throughout the year when track conditions allow.
