The mountains rise like ancient waves frozen in time — and among them stands Black Peak, watching over Lake Wānaka and the distant shimmer of Mt. Aspiring. This journey is your chance to step into that landscape, to walk where few ever do, and to experience the silence and beauty of New Zealand’s alpine heart.

Your adventure begins with a helicopter flight into the mountains, the world dropping away beneath you as ridgelines unfold in every direction. From your landing point, follow the trail toward Black Peak’s summit, where sweeping views of the Southern Alps stretch to the horizon. As the day fades, reach your private backcountry hut — a cosy alpine haven warmed by a wood burner and the golden light of sunset.

After a peaceful night in the high country, wake to crisp mountain air and a hearty breakfast before setting out again to explore the surrounding ridges and valleys. In winter, the same route transforms into a snowshoe adventure through untouched white silence. Whether you come for the hiking or the stillness, this trip is your invitation to slow down, look around, and breathe in the pure mountain air!

Route details

Day 1
Summit and Sunset

This is a sample itinerary and can change due to weather and other unforeseen circumstances. Please use it as a guide.

After meeting at the helicopter staging area, we take to the skies for a breathtaking flight over Lake Wanaka. The helicopter sets us down on a high ridgeline, where the hike to Black Peak begins. From the summit, the view unfolds in every direction — Mount Aspiring, Lake Wanaka, and the distant township shimmering far below.

We spend the afternoon hiking along alpine trails, stopping for a picnic lunch surrounded by vast mountain scenery. By evening, we reach our cozy mountain accommodation — the private Black Peak Hut. With space for six and a warm wood burner, it’s the perfect alpine retreat. As your guide prepares a hearty dinner, you can relax and watch the sun fade behind the peaks.

  • Capable of 2 consecutive days ascent and descent
  • Capable of carrying 5kg pack
  • Comfortable in a range of adverse weather conditions
  • Recent experience on “rough track” terrain including steep hills, river crossings, scree, boulders etc.
