The Wilkin Valley feels like a secret carved into the wild heart of New Zealand — a place where ice-fed rivers shimmer through untouched rainforest and the air carries the silence of true wilderness. Each step here feels like a journey back in time, into a landscape that has barely changed since the glaciers first withdrew.

Your adventure begins with a breathtaking helicopter flight deep into Mount Aspiring National Park, landing in the secluded Upper Wilkin Valley. From the Top Forks Hut, your days unfold among mountain cirques and mirror-like alpine lakes — Diana, Lucidus, and Castalia — each named by early explorers for their beauty. Guided by experts, you’ll cross river flats, wander through beech forests, and climb toward turquoise waters framed by snow and stone.

The journey ends with a thrilling jet boat ride down the Wilkin River, returning you to civilization with tired legs and a full heart. Join us for an unforgettable hike through one of the most remote and spectacular corners of New Zealand’s Southern Alps!

Route details

Day 1
Journey into the Wilkin Valley

This is a sample itinerary and can change due to weather and other unforeseen circumstances. Please use it as a guide.

Arrive at our Wānaka office at 8:30 a.m. to meet your guide, complete a gear check, and review the weather forecast. Any final items are organised before we set off, and you can safely store extra belongings at the office.

We then drive about 45 minutes to the village of Makarora, where a helicopter awaits to fly us deep into Mount Aspiring National Park, landing in the remote wilderness of Jumboland. From there, a relaxed 4 km hike along the river flats of the Upper Wilkin Valley brings us to Top Forks Hut, our base for the next nights. The afternoon is spent exploring the valley, with the option to continue through Snow Bridge Gorge to Waterfall Flat before returning to the hut for the evening.

Hike time: 2 hrs | Distance: 4 km
