Rock climbing here feels like reading the landscape line by line — hands on warm schist, eyes on lakes, time slowing down between moves. Wanaka and Queenstown offer a rare kind of freedom: cliffs close to town, mountains all around, and routes that suit both first-timers and experienced climbers looking for something real.
The plan for the day depends on the weather, the terrain, and your climbing experience. You have 3 options — spend the day on friendly local crags, learning movement and rope skills, or head deeper into the Matukituki Valley for longer multi-pitch routes where the walls rise straight out of the alpine cirques. In Queenstown, classic lines in the Remarkables combine solid rock, clean belays, and wide views stretching far below your feet.
You meet your guide in Wanaka, sort gear, and drive straight to the climbing area. Everything is close, flexible, and focused on making the most of the day. Join us for a day on the rock — focused, active, and quietly unforgettable.

Route details
Option 1 — Crag Day
The day begins at 8:30am in Wanaka, where you meet your guide, check equipment, and go over the weather. After loading the vehicle, you head out to one of the nearby crags. The climbing here is varied and well protected, with both sport routes and classic trad lines on solid schist. It’s an ideal setting to build confidence, refine technique, or simply enjoy quality movement on rock. For those looking for something bigger, the day can shift into the Matukituki Valley, where longer routes and steeper walls offer a more committing alpine feel in dramatic surroundings.
Option 2 — DB Eh? Buttress
You start the morning in Wanaka with a full gear check and briefing before driving to the Remarkables Ski Area near Queenstown. The focus of the day is alpine multi-pitch climbing, often on the DB Eh? Buttress — one of the area’s most well-known routes. With bolted belays and clean slab climbing, the route flows naturally upward. Between pitches, you pause at belays high above the valley, taking in wide views of Queenstown and the surrounding peaks from around 2000 meters.
Option 3 — Wye Creek
After meeting in Wanaka at 8:30am and preparing gear, you drive to the Remarkables. Depending on weather and conditions, the day starts either on the lower crags of Wye Creek for a relaxed warm-up, or higher up in the Alta Cirque. A steady 1 to 1.5-hour walk leads toward a mountain lake, opening up wide alpine views along the way. Once on the rock, the focus is on longer alpine-style routes in a quiet, high mountain setting.
