The scenic Poonhill trek is well-liked by tourists and travelers for its stunning views of vast snow-covered mountains and breathtaking sunrises and sunsets.

This short trek provides all the highlights of a longer, more challenging journey in Nepal but in a more condensed timeframe. Known also as the Ghorepani Trek, this route is situated in the lower Annapurna region and forms part of the larger Annapurna Circuit and Annapurna Base Camp treks. The renowned hill station is located near the village of Ghorepani in the Myagdi district of Nepal. Poonhill stands at an elevation of about 3,210 meters (10,531 feet) and is approximately 68-69 kilometers from Pokhara. The 4-day itinerary for the Poonhill trek begins and concludes in Pokhara, offering an enriching experience for those keen to explore the culture, lifestyle, and natural beauty of traditional Nepal with minimal physical effort and without delving into remote wilderness areas.

I am Ajay, a seasoned mountain guide, group leader, and passionate traveler with an unwavering love for adventure. Travel has been more than just a profession—it's a way of life. Having spent over two-thirds of my existence exploring Nepal's breathtaking landscapes, I have traversed nearly every district on foot, by bicycle, and through hikes, from the remote western frontiers to the far eastern reaches. My journey into tourism was not just a career choice but a mission. Witnessing the unethical practices in Nepal’s tourism industry, I was determined to create something different—something built on integrity, responsibility, and authenticity. This vision led me to establish a platform where adventure meets ethical tourism. My goal is to showcase Nepal’s raw beauty while promoting responsible travel that respects nature, culture, and local communities. Over the years, I have built a thriving community of climbers, adventurers, and explorers from across the globe who share stories of the mountains and cherish the spirit of exploration. For me, every journey is more than just reaching a destination—it’s about the experience, the people, and the lessons learned along the way. Whether trekking through the Himalayas, cycling across rugged terrains, or leading groups on life-changing expeditions, I am always driven by the desire to inspire others to embrace the true essence of travel. Let’s explore, experience, and evolve—one adventure at a time!

Route details

Day 1
Pokhara to Ghandruk and Trek to Tadapani (via Nayapul) (2630 m)

The 4-day itinerary begins in Pokhara, a city of lakes in the west that upholds its reputation as a tourist hub and offers ample options for people with varied preferences and backgrounds. A warm, welcoming, and tranquil place that has so much to see and show. Additionally, it serves as a gateway to the legendary Annapurna Circuit and the Annapurna base camp trekking route. Pokhara does it like no other city.

The trek starts after leaving behind the unparalleled beauty of the lakeside city; you’ll take a 20-minute morning taxi ride to Harichowk. From there, you'll take a jeep ride to Ghandruk. Along the way, you’ll be immersed in a quintessential Nepali landscape. The journey unfolds through terraced fields and passes by numerous waterfalls, both named and unnamed. Throughout the trip, you'll be accompanied by breathtaking views of the Machapuchare (Fishtail) and Annapurna peaks, as well as the flowing Modi Khola river. The specific section of the journey from Nayapul to Ghandruk covers approximately 20 kilometers (12 miles) along a local, uneven, and bumpy road, taking about 3 to 4 hours. Once you arrive in Ghandruk, you'll have a one-hour break to enjoy lunch.

Situated at an elevation of 2,010 meters (6,600 feet) above sea level, Ghandruk is an entry point to the Annapurna region. Ghandruk is a small traditional Gurung village in the Kaski district of Nepal, located near the Modi Khola (river), a tributary of the Kali Gandaki river. This two-century-old village, with stone-paved streets and traditional slate-roofed houses, offers a snapshot of the traditional Gurung lifestyle and culture, rewarding interaction with people who have been living there for generations.

Iconic peaks like Machapuchare and a few of the Annapurna ranges are clearly visible from Ghandruk and become the highlight of the trek. Ghandruk alone can be taken as a destination to visit as it is the largest Gurung Village in the Annapurna region, where everything is preserved as it is.

After a well-deserved lunch in Ghandruk, you'll embark on a 3-hour trek to Tadapani. The trail features several ascents and descents, leading you through dense forests of rhododendron, oak, and pine. Along the way, you'll pass through small, picturesque villages, offering a glimpse into the local lifestyle. The journey is enriched by stunning views of the surrounding hills and distant mountains, making this trek a rewarding blend of natural beauty and cultural immersion.

Overnight in Tadapani.

Tour provider's comments

In comparison to any other classic treks in Nepal, poon hill is the easiest of all. However, that clearly doesn't mean Poon Hill is just like taking a stroll in your neighbourhood. With a few strenuous ascents and rugged terrain,  this trek requires a basic level of fitness and stamina.

The Ghorepani poon hill trek is a moderate and beginner-friendly trek that is relatively easy and comfortable, but that does not mean it’s as simple as walking on a smooth, paved road in major cities. The Poon Hill trail can be steep and strenuous in some parts, requiring an average of 7 to 8 hours of walking each day. This trek is a short one, and the trek can be done in 3 or 4 days. Although this trek does not require any climbing or technical skills, prior trekking experiences and a decent fitness level can be beneficial.

I had an incredible experience on the Poon Hill trek organized by this team. My guide, Bijay, was outstanding: he was always on time, attentive, spoke excellent English, and made the trek enjoyable. Bijay chose fantastic guest houses that were very comfortable, offering hot showers and stunning views of Annapurna South (first night in Ulleri) and Dhaulagiri (second night in Ghorepani). He consistently ensured I was comfortable and had everything I needed, showcasing his extensive experience. I highly recommend both the company and Bijay!
