The High Atlas has a dry, powerful beauty: red earth under your boots, stone villages on the slopes, high plateaus cut by wind, and camps set far from the noise of the cities. This GR Amazigh trek takes you deep into Morocco’s mountain country, from Marrakech to the Ourika Valley, the Yagour Plateau, remote valleys, volcanic ridges, and Berber villages where life still follows the rhythm of the mountains.

The route is demanding and made for experienced hikers. You will cross terraces and shepherd trails, see ancient rock engravings on the Plateau du Yagour, climb Meltsen at 3,600 m, move through the Zat Valley, ascend Arjout at 3,741 m, descend the green Assaka gorges, and walk across the Izema Valley and the Agoudal-n-Iredele Plateau. Some days are long and steep, with high passes, rough tracks, and altitude up to around 3,850 m.

The trek is fully guided, with mule support for luggage on most stages and porters on some high mountain sections. Nights are spent in a riad or hotel in Marrakech, village guesthouses, and shared bivouac tents under clear mountain skies. Join this trek if you want a real Atlas expedition with high summits, remote camps, and Berber mountain culture along the way!

Altitude and Acclimatization

The GR Amazigh trek reaches elevations up to 3,850 m, where even experienced hikers may feel the effects of altitude. The itinerary is carefully designed with gradual acclimatization, allowing your body to adjust as you progress through valleys, high passes, and volcanic ridges.

Participants should be aware of common altitude symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, shortness of breath, or nausea. Our experienced guides monitor the group closely, adjust the pace when needed, and provide advice to ensure a safe and enjoyable trek.

A flexible mindset, attention to your body, and clear communication with the guides are essential for a successful high-altitude experience.
