She Treks Tunisia: Women’s Off-the-Beaten-Path Adventure

Your adventure begins today in Tunis. After a fulfilling breakfast, you'll go on a guided tour of the historic old city of Tunis.

Throughout this tour, we will discover various highlights of old Tunis, including the Zaitouna Mosque, bustling souks, a mausoleum, and a madrassa.

Following the tour, you'll savor a traditional lunch in the Medina before proceeding to Carthage for a cultural biking experience. Carthage is an ancient city with immense historical importance. Once a powerful Phoenician colony on the coast, it became a dominant maritime empire in the 3rd century BCE and was a major rival of Rome during the Punic Wars.

We'll equip ourselves with bikes and helmets and set out to explore Carthage's key ruins, such as the Tophet, Punic Ports, Baths of Antoninus, Roman Villas, Byrsa Hill, Saint Louis Cathedral, and the Carthage Aqueduct, all of which provide insight into the city's rich history.

After our guided biking tour of Carthage, we will make our way to the charming town of Sidi Bou Said. Sidi Bou Said is a picturesque coastal village in Tunisia renowned for its beautiful blue and white buildings that evoke the Greek islands. Situated on a hill with views of the Mediterranean Sea, it offers a delightful mix of art, culture, and stunning coastal scenery. This is an ideal location to appreciate the Mediterranean's beauty and take plenty of photos.

Our journey takes us next to Kairouan, one of the holiest cities in Islam and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Famous for its Great Mosque, which features an impressive minaret, Kairouan is historically significant as a hub of Islamic scholarship and culture, drawing both pilgrims and tourists to its well-preserved architectural and religious landmarks.

We will explore the Great Mosque of Kairouan, the Old Medina, and the Mausoleum of Sidi Sahbi. This spiritual city possesses a unique allure that can only be fully appreciated through a visit.

Afterward, we will head towards Tozeur.

After breakfast, we will set off on a guided walking tour of Tozeur. During this tour, we will explore the historical landmarks in the area, including old mosques, museums, a local market, and an Amazigh café.

Next, we will enjoy a traditional Oasis lunch before going on a distinctive day hike known as “Bouhelal.”

This hike offers more than just a stroll through the desert; it’s a journey through the Earth’s ancient history, showcasing geological wonders and marine fossils that are unique to this region. The landscape here has drawn the attention of famous producers and filmmakers, as scenes from Star Wars were filmed in this remarkable location.

After breakfast, we'll go on our journey to discover the stunning landscapes of Southern Tunisia.

In the morning, we will travel a short distance from Tozeur to Chebika, Tamerza, and Midas, where we'll encounter oases, canyons, waterfalls, and otherworldly scenery.

Next, we’ll venture further into the desert. Today promises to be one of the highlights of our trip as we begin our desert exploration, set up camp, unplug from the modern world, and get a taste of life as a true nomad.

Before reaching our campsite, we will enjoy a two-hour camel trek, arriving just in time for sunset. If you'd like, you can help set up camp and prepare traditional wood-fired couscous for dinner.

When you rise in the morning, you'll find freshly baked bread ready for you. After a leisurely morning and a delicious breakfast, we'll depart from our camp for an ATV adventure tour before heading towards Tataouine.

In Tunisia, a troglodyte refers to a community living in caves that have been carved into the mountains. These cave dwellings offer natural insulation against the harsh desert temperatures, and some are renowned worldwide for their unique architectural style.

Tonight, you'll experience staying in a troglodyte home, allowing you to glimpse this remarkable way of life.

Tataouine is not just a fictional location from Star Wars; it is also one of the most distinctive areas in Tunisia and indeed a real place.

Today, we will explore ancient Amazigh ksours (fortified structures), abandoned villages, and dinosaur footprints.

Afterward, we’ll enjoy lunch with the locals before setting off on a breathtaking sunset hike in the area.

Following breakfast, we will go on a scenic hike from Douiret to Chenini.

This hike takes you through enchanting ancient Berber villages and the rugged terrain of the Matmata region. As you navigate this beautiful trail, you'll encounter troglodyte homes carved into the cliffs, offering a unique and immersive glimpse into the area's rich cultural and historical heritage.

After completing our hike, we'll head toward Mahdia, making a stop at El Jem. The El Jem Amphitheater is a remarkably preserved ancient Roman structure from the 3rd century AD. It is one of the largest Roman amphitheaters in the world, with a capacity for up to 35,000 spectators, showcasing the architectural brilliance of the Roman Empire in North Africa.

After breakfast, we will discover the delightful coastal town of Mahdia, enjoying its tranquil beauty and lively ambiance.

Following that, we’ll take a relaxed trip back to Tunis, where we’ll stroll through the historic streets of the old Medina, rich in culture and tradition.
