The High Atlas rises like a great stone wave above Marrakech, and for four days you step straight into its rhythm — the hush of early-morning trails, the echo of mule bells, the cold brightness of air that hasn’t changed for centuries. This journey is built for travelers who want to feel the mountains rather than just look at them.

Your days will be spent along ancient Berber paths: from the terraces of Aroumd to the white-washed shrine of Sidi Chamharouch and the long, steady climb toward the Toubkal Refuge. At dawn you set off for the summit itself — the highest point in North Africa — where the whole Atlas opens beneath you in a sea of ridges and deep green valleys. The route then leads you across high passes, past hidden waterfalls, passing down old mule tracks into remote mountain hamlets.

Throughout the trip you travel with an experienced local guide, stay in simple mountain refuges and gîtes, and walk the same trails Berber communities have used for generations. Your transport, meals, and logistics are fully taken care of — all you need is curiosity and steady steps. Join us in the High Atlas and let Jbel Toubkal show you its world, one breathtaking horizon at a time!

Route details

Day 1
From Marrakech to the Shadow of Toubkal

We begin with an early departure from Marrakech, heading south for roughly two hours through the Tizi n’Techt pass until we reach the mountain gateway village of Imlil (1740 m)—often called Morocco’s miniature Chamonix because of its maze of trails and flowing streams. After enjoying mint tea at a local guesthouse, we start trekking up the Aït Mizane Valley, moving past the stone-and-earth Berber settlements of Aroumd (Aremd) (1843 m), Taourirt, Targa and Imoula. The route eventually leads us to the small pilgrimage village of Sidi Chamharouch, perched beside a cascading stream with houses stacked irregularly along the slope.

We pause here for a picnic, then continue on steep mule paths toward the Toubkal Refuge (3207 m), located just where spring snow usually begins. After this demanding first day, dinner and accommodation await at the refuge. Before nightfall, you may take a short wander around the surrounding slopes to prepare mentally for the climb ahead.

We have just finished some days in the High Atlas with Mohamed as our guide. Really this has been the best trip we have made in many years. The scenery, information, explanations and humour presented by Mohamed made every day a great day. He is a real gentleman, seems to know everyone in the surrounding villages and also has the nicest family - we had the privilege of meeting them. Thank you Mohamed, Ian and I have had a wonderful time and will hope to return to Morocco someday!
