Hiking Adventure in Fuji, Hakone, and Izu National Park

After spending Day 1 trekking west along the Old Tokaido foot highway, today we turn south at Mishima.

A local bus from Shuzenji Station takes us to our hike's starting point, where we grab a picnic lunch from a convenience store. We follow two rivers through lush forests, traversing the Amagi Range, the highest point in the peninsula. This historic route, once traveled by Townsend Harris, Japan's first foreign diplomat, connects Shimoda with Tokyo and is tied to the famous Japanese love story, Dancing Girl of Izu. We enjoy a picnic lunch and end our hike at the Kawazu 7 Falls, known for its stunning waterfalls.

Finally, we take a bus to Imaihama Beach, where we stay in rustic beachfront cabins with shared facilities. Today's trek covers about 12 km.

This morning, we'll begin the Urban Legend Walk along Perry Road, tracing Commodore Perry's 19th-century arrival in Japan. Enjoy Shimoda's picturesque harbor, reflecting on Japan's first contact with the world after 250 years of isolation. Pick up a picnic lunch from a convenience store.

In the afternoon, we'll take a coastal walk. We'll bus south from Shimoda to explore the stunning volcanic coastline, shaped by the Pacific Ocean and featuring dramatic sea caves in the Izu Peninsula UNESCO Global Geopark. This leisurely walk will take us through charming coastal villages.

Our day ends at Yumigahama Beach, where we’ll stay the night at Kuykamura (shared bathroom). Today's walk covers about 10 km.

At checkout, your guide will assist in arranging a luggage courier service to send your main bags to your Day 6 accommodation. From our Yumigahama hotel, we’ll take a local bus and train north along the scenic Izu Peninsula to begin today's hike.

Enjoy a picnic lunch from a convenience store along the Jogasaki Coastal Trail, where you can admire ancient lava flows and stunning views of Sagami Bay and the Pacific Ocean.

We'll then take the local train further north to Atami, staying overnight at the Pacific Panorama guest house in Ajiro (featured in the opening episode of Shogun). Today's hike covers 10 km.

The trip end at Atami Station (approx. 8km hike).

This is an excellent chance to reach the summit of one of the many small volcanoes on the Izu Peninsula. We'll start by walking, taking a bus, or hailing a taxi from the ryokan to the hiking trailhead situated high above Atami township. From there, we will steadily ascend to the summit of Mt. Kurotake, which stands at 800 meters, where, weather permitting, you can enjoy stunning views of Mt. Fuji.

A picnic lunch will be enjoyed along the way, sourced from a local convenience store. We’ll also take a leisurely loop around a small natural pond at this elevation. Finally, we will take a bus or taxi back to Atami Station, marking the end of our tour. Today's hike covers approximately 8 kilometers.
