Khuvsgul Lake Adventure: Multi-Activity Tour

A brief flight to northern Mongolia takes you to Khuvsgul, the nation's deepest lake. This breathtaking expanse of water is the third largest by volume in Asia, containing 70% of Mongolia's freshwater resources. At a depth of 265 meters, it is nestled within a tectonic rift and surrounded by the vast Siberian taiga.

Upon arrival, we embark on a drive of over an hour to a delightful lakeside resort, where you can spend the day hiking along the shore and marveling at the stunning reflections in the crystal-clear waters. For an added adventure, you have the option to book a motorboat ride to explore the lake and its unspoiled wilderness.

After breakfast, we take a brief drive to the base of the Bayan mountain range, which borders the lake. This region is covered in ancient larch forests, with the ridges soaring high above the tree line.

Our hike spans 7 km along narrow trails as we tackle the steep inclines. Once we surpass the treeline, the terrain shifts to a rugged, rocky ridge. At the summit, reaching an elevation of 2380 meters, we savor a well-earned lunch while taking in stunning views of the vast lake and the lush green slopes below.

We make our way back to camp in the late afternoon.

Leaving the lake behind, we make our way to a charming mountain range, where each hilltop boasts breathtaking granite formations. We'll dedicate 2-3 hours to hiking in this tranquil natural setting.

Our next stop is an intriguing historical site featuring 30 Deer Stelae and burial mounds. These megaliths are beautifully engraved with detailed depictions of soaring deer, which served as ritual markers for the nobility during the Bronze Age.

In the evening, we unwind at a comfortable resort that overlooks the Delger River.

Following breakfast, set off on a half-day horseback riding adventure through the Delgermurun River valley. Riding sturdy Mongolian horses involves techniques that differ from Western riding styles, as these horses respond to a unique set of commands and rider cues. Nevertheless, they are intelligent and highly responsive creatures. With local guides leading the way, you’ll traverse open grasslands on varied terrain, allowing for trotting, galloping, and racing. The guides will enrich your experience by sharing insights into the nomadic way of life.

After enjoying a picnic lunch by the riverbank, prepare for a few hours of kayaking or rafting. As you paddle along, soak in the stunning views of lush grasslands and rolling hills. The clear waters of the Delgermurun River offer chances to spot a variety of bird species. This activity perfectly combines relaxation and excitement as you navigate gentle currents while embracing the tranquil surroundings.

At day’s end, we will return to the cozy comforts of the riverside resort.

After several days of discovering the untouched beauty of northern Mongolia and immersing ourselves in the nomadic lifestyle, we board our flight back to the capital, reminiscing about the unforgettable experiences and memories we've created.

Once we arrive, we come together to commemorate our trip with a traditional meal.
