Route details

After being collected from your accommodation in Chã das Caldeiras or São Filipe, you’ll travel to Pai António in Mosteiros to begin your trek.

Follow the road past homes built on lava rock terraces and walk through banana, orange, and coffee plantations while learning about the geology and the recent eruption that covered much of Mosteiros in lava. Continue your ascent into the protected Monte Velha forest—the island’s wettest area—featuring eucalyptus, pine, sisal, and a variety of endemic plants. Along the way, discover unique local flora and fauna and take in sweeping views of untouched nature and the towering Fogo volcano, Cape Verde’s highest summit.

Your hike concludes with a crossing of the Bangaeira crater before reaching Chã das Caldeiras at an altitude of 1,720 meters.
