The Great Albertine Adventure

Following an early morning breakfast, you will be transported to the Kanyanchu Visitors Centre. There, you will meet an experienced ranger guide who will take you on a hike through the forest in search of a family of chimpanzees. Once you locate them, you will have the opportunity to spend an hour with them.

Afterward, you will return to the starting point to receive your trekking certificate.

Following this incredible experience, you'll be transferred to Rwenzori Mountains National Park in preparation for your hiking and trekking adventure in the Rwenzori Mountains. You'll spend the night at Trekkers Hostel.

Begin your journey at Trekkers, located at an altitude of 1,450 meters, and spend the night at Sine Hut, which sits at 2,596 meters, resulting in an elevation gain of 1,146 meters.

We commence our trek by ascending the valley floor, surrounded by the towering trees of the Afro Montane Forest Zone. This gradual climb is accompanied by the sounds of numerous birds and the possibility of spotting blue monkeys darting through the trees. Occasionally, visitors might encounter groups of 15 to 20 black and white Colobus monkeys swinging overhead. Sightings of the rare L’Hoest monkey, a cultural emblem of the Bukonzo people and protected under the King’s authority, may also occur, along with distant calls from wild chimpanzees. The diverse flora includes a variety of tree species, bamboo thickets, low shrubs, flowers, fungi, and numerous moss- and lichen-covered vines cascading from the tall trees, creating a stunning landscape. Just 200 meters from Sine Hut lie Enock's Falls, providing a perfect opportunity for memorable photographs.

At Sine Camp, situated at 2,596 meters, wooden huts are nestled among the tall forest trees on a narrow ridge. Here, you can relax and take in the breathtaking views of the Afro Montane forest while gazing down at a magnificent waterfall tumbling over rocks far below. Some guests prefer to sit outside by the campfire, sharing stories with guides about the mountains and local life. Sine Camp is located just below the bamboo zone, which is home to a variety of bird species. Enock Falls, only 150 meters from the camp, is surrounded by vibrant green vegetation and hanging vines, making it truly picturesque. Guests can choose to stay at Sine or, for those who are fit and wish to continue, head to Kalama Camp at 3,134 meters. This option not only offers spectacular views but also allows for more time at Mutinda Camp, where you can hike up to Mutinda Lookout at 3,975 meters for even more stunning vistas.

Following a hearty breakfast, the trekking begins at 8:30 AM as you enter the Bamboo-Mimulopsis Zone, which features a steep ascent with numerous tall steps. During the wet season, this bamboo area can be quite muddy and slippery, slowing your progress. Nevertheless, the scenery and forest are stunning as you ascend 551 meters over a distance of 1.8 kilometers to reach Kalalama Camp at an altitude of 3,147 meters, situated in the Heather-Rapanea Zone. Here, you can take a break and enjoy a quick cup of tea or coffee before continuing on to Mutinda Camp. The trail winds up and over several small knolls along a ridge, then descends into the valley before climbing again, crossing several small streams and passing near moss-covered waterfalls. You will then steadily ascend alongside a beautiful mossy river that cascades over rocks beneath the Giant Heather trees, whose trunks are draped in green moss and adorned with Usnea lichen hanging from their branches. The path twists and turns as you navigate up the deep valley, rich with diverse plants and flowers. This valley is remarkable, featuring many Giant Heather trees that create a lovely ambiance often enveloped in mist.

In the afternoon, you may choose to hike up to the top of Mutinda Lookout, which takes about one to two hours to ascend and one hour to descend. The views from the moss-covered rocks at 3,925 meters are breathtaking, offering sights of the Rwenzori Mountains as well as Kasese town and Lake George below. For those planning to climb Margherita or any of the main peaks, reaching Mutinda at 3,975 meters is also an excellent way to acclimatize and mitigate the risk of altitude sickness.

The trail spans 4.9 kilometers, beginning at an elevation of 3,688 meters and ascending to 4,062 meters.

This section of the trail can be quite muddy, especially during the rainy season; however, with some skill, you can navigate from tussock to tussock to ease your passage. We have installed several boardwalks over the worst boggy areas and are continuing to build more to improve the trail's accessibility. As you traverse the Mutinda Valley, you'll encounter tussock grass and everlasting flowers, along with numerous Giant Lobelias, before tackling a steep ascent to the Namusangi Valley at 3,840 meters. This valley features dramatic waterfalls and stunning views of the Mutinda Peaks. The Namusangi Valley is broad, with various ups and downs, and involves crossing several bogs as the path steadily climbs to Bugata Camp at 4,062 meters. Bugata Camp is perched high on Bamwanjara Pass above Bugata Lake, offering views across Lake Kopello towards Weismann’s Peak, which is frequently snow-capped, as well as down the valley towards Lake Africa and Lake Kanganyika, along with several small peaks leading to Mutinda Camp. The region is rich in tussock grass, everlasting flowers (Helichrysum), St John’s Wort (Hypericum becquaeritii), giant groundsel (Senecio adnivalis), and Giant Lobelia (Lobellia gibberoa). Additionally, you may spot many Red Forest Duikers (Cephalophuc nigrifrons rubidus), a subspecies unique to the Rwenzori Mountains.

Bugata Camp offers excellent amenities, including solar lights, clean toilets, and bathrooms where guides can prepare warm water for washing. There is also a helicopter pad located at GPS coordinates N 18.312 E29 53.457 for emergency evacuations. However, it's important to note that helicopter services in Uganda can cost around $10,000 per hour of flight time—significantly higher than in many other countries—so having insurance for potential rescue is advisable.

Ascend Weismann’s Peak at 4,620 meters and Stella Peak at 4,626 meters, covering a distance of 3.7 kilometers to Weismann’s Peak and an additional 800 meters to Stella Peak before returning. The total trek spans 9 kilometers and takes approximately 4 to 6 hours. The journey begins with a walk across the hillside beneath towering cliffs above Bugata Lake, then around a ridge to Lake Kopello, where we stroll along the lakeshore. Researchers note that the average water temperature here is 2˚C. As you ascend, you'll enjoy stunning views of the four lakes in the valley below. The final stretch to the peak is steep and rocky, which can become challenging in snowy or icy conditions, potentially requiring the use of ropes for safety. On a clear day, the vistas include prominent peaks such as Mt Stanley, Mt Speke, and Mt Baker. The summit of Weismann’s Peak is relatively flat or dome-shaped, adorned with deep moss that enhances its scenic beauty. Although Stella Peak is close to Weismann’s Peak, reaching it demands full technical skills due to its dangerous nature; thus, we do not recommend attempting to cross over.

From the summit, we will descend directly to Kiharo Camp at 3,460 meters down the Nyamwamba Valley. At the valley's head, you'll find a vast area filled with thick Giant Groundsel and dense evergreen undergrowth, alongside moss-covered rocks towering above, creating a unique microenvironment. As you make your way down the valley, you'll notice several flat, boggy regions that were once occupied by glaciers millions of years ago, leaving behind large rock formations. This valley is also home to many Red Forest Duikers (Cephalophus nigrifrons rubidus). You can spend the night at Kiharo Camp, situated at 3,460 meters in a region abundant with evergreen plants and flowing streams. Especially during the drier months, the night air is filled with the calls of rock hyraxes perched on the rocky cliffs above.

The distance from Kiharo Camp to the park gate is 16 km, followed by an additional 2.8 km to Trekkers Hostel. The walk typically takes between 5 to 8 hours, so those needing to catch flights back to Kampala or continue on to other activities should depart from Kiharo early.

The trail leading down the Nyamwamba Valley is primarily downhill and offers breathtaking views, with moss-covered rocks lining the river, cascading waterfalls, deep valleys, and forests that are among the most beautiful in the Rwenzori Mountains. It took us six years to establish a route through this area that is accessible for tourists. In 1937, explorer and geologist McConnell attempted to navigate this valley but was unsuccessful and had to seek an alternative path up the mountain. Now, you have the opportunity to explore this stunning valley.

A few kilometers from Kiharo Camp, the trail veers right to follow the river. In open areas, you might spot a Duiker quietly grazing in small clearings along the riverbank. This region likely hosts the highest population of Rwenzori Red Duikers in the National Park. As you continue downriver, the terrain becomes steeper with numerous spectacular waterfalls. After passing these waterfalls, we ascend over a high ridge and descend through dense forests, enjoying magnificent views of the valley below. We will pause for lunch at Forest View Camp before making our way back to Base Camp. This trek concludes with a wonderful experience before heading onward to Queen Elizabeth National Park, where we will stay overnight at Bush Lodge or a similar accommodation.

After an early breakfast, you'll be transferred to Kasenyi for a game drive. The Kasenyi plains, known for their high concentration of prey, draw in predators, offering opportunities to spot some of the big cats found in Queen Elizabeth National Park during this thrilling adventure.

In the afternoon, enjoy a boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel, which links Lake Edward and Lake George. This two-hour boat safari will allow you to observe a variety of aquatic, semi-aquatic, terrestrial wildlife, and birds, making it a memorable day in Queen Elizabeth National Park.

You'll spend the night at Bush Lodge or a similar accommodation.

After a leisurely morning breakfast transfer to Bwindi Mgahinga Gorilla National Park a head of Uganda gorilla trekking adventure.

Overnight at Travelers Rest Hotel or similar.

Following an early breakfast, you'll head to the ranger station for a briefing on the guidelines for interacting with gorillas.

Then, accompanied by an experienced ranger guide, you'll trek into the forest to look for the gorillas. Once located, you'll have the opportunity to spend an hour with them.

After this memorable experience, you'll return to the lodge for the night at Travelers Rest Hotel or a similar accommodation.

Following an early breakfast, you'll be transferred to Ntebeko in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park for a golden monkey trekking adventure.

After the trekking experience, you'll head to Kigali, Rwanda.

Spend the night at Hotel Des Melli Collines or a comparable accommodation.

Enjoy a relaxed morning breakfast before heading to the Kigali Genocide Museum to honor the victims of the 1994 Rwandan genocide against the Tutsi.

Depending on your flight schedule, you will then be transferred to the airport for your departure, concluding your trip.
