Ol Doinyo Lengai, the sacred “Mountain of God” to the Maasai, is the only active carbonatite volcano on Earth. Rising above the Rift Valley floor near Lake Natron, this dramatic peak offers one of Tanzania’s most unique and spiritual climbs.

The mountain’s name and its white lava—formed when carbonated magma reacts with air—are deeply symbolic in Maasai tradition. Though the ascent is steep and demanding, no technical climbing skills are required, only endurance and determination.

Climbers are rewarded with spectacular views of the crater, shimmering Lake Natron, and distant Mount Kilimanjaro. This two-day adventure combines raw volcanic landscapes, cultural encounters, and unforgettable wilderness scenery.

Route details

Morning pickup from your Arusha hotel, driving north toward Lake Natron. Enjoy picturesque landscapes and glimpses of Maasai villages and wildlife along the way.
After lunch, check in at Lengai Safari Lodge. In the afternoon, take a guided walk to Ngare Sero Waterfall, crossing streams and narrow gorges—wear sandals for comfort. Later, drive to Lake Natron’s shores to photograph the colorful alkaline flats and flamingos. Return to the lodge for dinner and rest.

In case of booking cancellation the next policy applies. Tourists will receive a full amount they paid for the reservation in case they cancel more than 35 days in advance of the tour start date. In the event of cancellation within the period of 34 to 16 days before the tour start date - they are entitled to receive 50% of the booking amount. Cancelations made within 15 days before the tour starts will not be entitled to a refund.
