Kilimanjaro Vertical Challenge

Today’s trek continues through increasingly rugged terrain as the forest slowly opens into heath and moorland landscapes. The route climbs steep ridges with spectacular views beginning to emerge across the valleys below. As altitude increases, the scenery changes dramatically with giant senecio plants and volcanic rock formations appearing along the trail. The path eventually descends into the scenic Barranco Valley before reaching Barranco Camp (3,960m) beneath the towering Barranco Wall. This is one of the most beautiful camps on Kilimanjaro.

The day begins with the exciting ascent of the Great Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical climb that offers incredible views across the Southern Circuit. After reaching the top, the trail traverses ridges and valleys with panoramic scenery of glaciers, alpine desert landscapes, and the distant summit. The route then descends into Karanga Valley before a final short climb to Karanga Camp (4,035m). This shorter trekking day is important for acclimatization and allows time to rest before higher elevations.

Leaving Karanga Camp, the trail joins the Southern Circuit route toward Barafu Camp. The landscape becomes increasingly barren and rocky as trekkers move through high alpine desert terrain beneath the summit glaciers. Along the way, enjoy dramatic views of both Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks while gaining altitude steadily. Arrive at Barafu Camp (4,640m) in the afternoon where an early dinner is served before preparing equipment and resting for the midnight summit attempt.

Around midnight, begin the challenging summit ascent under a sky full of stars. The climb is physically demanding, with cold temperatures, steep scree slopes, and high altitude making this the toughest section of the trek. After several hours of climbing, reach Stella Point in time for sunrise over Mawenzi Peak before continuing along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the highest point in Africa. After celebrating at the summit and taking photographs, descend carefully back to Barafu Camp for a short rest and lunch before continuing down to Mweka Camp (3,100m) for dinner and overnight.

The final day descends through lush rainforest along the Mweka Route. The lower elevations are rich with tropical vegetation, birdlife, and misty forest scenery. After reaching Mweka Gate, climbers receive their summit certificates and celebrate the successful completion of the trek. A vehicle transfer then returns you to Arusha, marking the end of the unforgettable Umbwe Route Kilimanjaro adventure.
