As dawn approaches, excitement grows with an early start between midnight and 2 a.m. This segment of the trek is the most demanding both mentally and physically.
We make our way to the summit in a zigzag pattern, striving to keep warm while focusing on the incredible sense of achievement that awaits us. Ascending through loose scree and potentially snow, we head towards Gillman’s Point on the crater rim. Here, you will be treated to a breathtaking sunrise during your brief pause. Those who hike faster may catch the sunrise from the summit. The final hour of your climb to Uhuru Peak will likely involve navigating through snow.
Congratulations! One step at a time, you have now reached Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and in all of Africa! After taking photos, celebrating, and perhaps shedding a few joyful tears, we take a moment to relish this remarkable achievement. We then begin our steep descent to Mweka Camp, stopping at Barafu for lunch and a short rest. We highly recommend using gaiters and trekking poles to manage the tricky loose gravel and volcanic ash. A well-deserved rest awaits you as you enjoy your last evening on the mountain.
Overnight at Mweka Camp.
