Embark on a journey through the heart of the Knuckles Mountain Range, where natural beauty and ancient legends intertwine. The Manigala Mountain hike offers a perfect blend of scenic landscapes, cultural history, and gentle adventure, making it a must-do for nature enthusiasts, photographers, and explorers alike.
Standing proudly at 1,104 meters above sea level, Manigala — also known as Ravanathenna — is believed to have been a landing site for King Ravana’s mythical Dandu Monara (Flying Machine). The name Manigala is said to originate from the Tamil word Mani (Time), as early settlers used the mountain’s shadow to measure time by the sunlight.
The trail begins near Bambarakiri Ella Falls, leading through traditional villages, paddy fields, and spice gardens, before ascending the open ridge of Manigala. The climb is moderate and accessible, rewarding hikers with panoramic views of the Knuckles peaks, cascading waterfalls, and emerald forests below.
