Spend a day surrounded by Sri Lanka’s breathtaking wilderness with a guided hike through the Horton Plains National Park, one of the island’s most remarkable and biodiverse natural reserves. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010, Horton Plains is located in Ohiya at an elevation of 2,100–2,300 meters above sea level — making it the coldest and windiest plateau in Sri Lanka.
This six-hour nature trail takes you through rolling grasslands, cloud forests, marshlands, and crystal-clear streams, revealing an incredible variety of endemic flora and fauna. The park is home to Sambar deer, bear monkeys, mongoose, and numerous rare bird species. It’s also the birthplace of Sri Lanka’s three major rivers — the Mahaweli, Walawe, and Kelani — making it a vital ecological treasure.
