There’s a moment when the helicopter lifts from the valley floor, and the familiar world slips away. Below you, rivers wind through the Matukituki Valley, and ahead — the rugged Harris Mountains open like a secret only the lucky get to see. This is the Black Peak Backcountry Escape: four days of pure alpine freedom, where each turn is carved into untouched snow and each sunrise feels earned.

Your journey begins in Wānaka, with a short flight into a remote mountain hut overlooking Treble Cone and Mount Aspiring. Days are spent touring the slopes of Black Peak — chasing powder across vast ridges, the Greenstone Trails, and the Rollercoaster runs. Some mornings start with a heli-drop straight to your first descent; others with the quiet rhythm of skins climbing toward a sunlit summit. Evenings bring warmth, laughter, and the kind of silence that only exists high in the Southern Alps.

No ski lifts, no crowds — just you, your guide, and endless white terrain. Travel by helicopter, sleep in a secluded alpine hut, and explore New Zealand’s most striking backcountry. Join us on Black Peak and rediscover what freedom on snow really means!

Route details

Day 1
Into the Mountains

Meet your guide at our Wānaka office at 4:00pm on the evening before departure for a pre-trip meeting. Your guide will check your clothing and equipment to make sure you have everything needed for the four-day adventure. Rental gear can be arranged and any last-minute purchases made before finalising plans for an early morning start.

The next morning, meet again at 8:00am for a full gear check before driving through the Matukituki Valley to our helicopter staging point at Cattle Flat, just past Treble Cone Ski Area. Our overnight gear is flown directly to the hut, keeping our packs light for the day. Once in the mountains, there’s a range of runs to explore — from the moderate South Face of Black Peak to the steeper Escapade Chutes. On some trips, it’s even possible to fly straight to the hut, drop off food and equipment, and catch a quick heli lift for the first ski descent of the trip. It’s an incredible start to the adventure.
