Some places feel like they were made for walking, and the Routeburn Track is one of them — a forest where light falls through high beech trees, a river that never stops moving, and mountains waiting quietly above it all. This half-day walk lets you slip into that world without rushing it.

You'll follow a gentle path through ancient forest, cross a swing bridge, hear the Routeburn River echo through the gorge, and watch birds flicker between the branches. Your guide will bring the landscape to life with stories — from Māori pathways to early explorers — while you walk toward views framed by snow-capped peaks.

With comfortable pacing, an easy trail, and transport from Queenstown included, it’s a perfect way to experience one of New Zealand’s most loved tracks. Join us and feel the calm of the Routeburn for yourself!

This is available as a private tour for $1,275 for up to 5 pax, any additional walkers are $255 pp.

Route details

Your journey begins with a scenic drive along the Queenstown–Glenorchy road, following the edge of Lake Wakatipu. After passing Glenorchy, the road winds through the area known as Paradise, eventually leading into Mt Aspiring National Park and the start of the famous Routeburn Track. Once you cross the swing bridge, you step into a beautiful beech forest. The trail here is wide and easy to walk on, giving you plenty of time to watch for native birds such as the rare Mohua (yellowhead), bush robin, and the tiny rifleman.

As you continue, the path runs beside the Routeburn River, which cuts dramatically through a steep gorge before disappearing under the rocks. The climb is gentle, taking you into a landscape shaped by millions of years—filled with ancient ferns, mosses, lichens, and towering beech trees. Along the way, your guide will tell stories about the history of the track and how it was once used by both Māori and early European explorers. There are numerous waterfalls and quiet spots where you can pause and enjoy the surroundings. The walk has a comfortable pace and gradually leads you toward views of snow-capped mountains.

Comfortable walking shoes and warm layers are recommended at any time of year. The walk goes ahead in most weather conditions, and rain jackets can be provided when needed. Tours operate throughout the year, depending on track conditions.
