Like a doorway into another world, the Siberia Valley opens beneath the whir of helicopter blades — a vast wilderness of golden tussock, shining rivers, and sharp mountain peaks. This hidden corner of Mount Aspiring National Park feels far from everything, yet close to the raw pulse of New Zealand’s Southern Alps.

From your base at the remote Siberia Hut, you’ll spend two unforgettable days exploring alpine trails and glacial valleys. Choose your pace — wander along the river flats, or take on the climb to Lake Crucible, a turquoise gem cradled by sheer rock walls. Those seeking a higher view can trek to Gillespie Pass for sweeping vistas across the Siberia and Young Valleys. Every step reveals another layer of this untouched backcountry.

Your adventure begins and ends with the thrill of flight — soaring into the mountains by helicopter and returning by jetboat through winding river canyons. Comfortable, guided, and deeply rewarding, this is a short journey that captures the very heart of the Southern Alps. Join us and discover why some places simply can’t be explained — only experienced!

Route details

Day 1
Into the Siberia Valley

This is a sample itinerary and can change due to weather and other unforeseen circumstances. Please use it as a guide.

The journey begins at 8:30am at our Wanaka office, where you’ll meet your guide for a full gear check and weather review. Any last-minute items are sorted before we drive 45 minutes to the small village of Makarora. From there, a scenic helicopter flight carries us high above the dramatic peaks of Mount Aspiring National Park, landing beside the remote Siberia Hut — our home for the night.
Once settled, we set out for an afternoon walk along the Siberia Valley, enjoying a riverside picnic and the incredible mountain backdrop.

For those eager for more adventure, we can start earlier to explore one of several side trips: the striking glacier-carved Lake Crucible, the panoramic summit of Gillespie Pass, or the upper reaches of Siberia Valley. Each offers unforgettable alpine views, pristine wilderness, and the quiet power of New Zealand’s high country.
