Route details

The journey begins at Te Kōpuke / Mt St. John, an extinct volcano offering panoramic city views and the first glimpse of the Meola Reef. From here, you descend through green parks, volcanic reserves, and fields of hardened lava — remnants of an eruption that flowed to the sea 28,500 years ago.

As you follow the lava’s path, your guide reveals stories hidden in the landscape: Māori legends of patupaiarehe fairies, colonial farming histories, and the reef’s transformation from mahinga kai food source to a restored conservation area.

Arriving at Meola Reef Te Tokaroa, you step onto its two-kilometre basalt tongue stretching into the harbour. The reef’s hexagonal rock patterns, mangroves, and salt marsh create a living mosaic, home to kingfishers, oystercatchers, and intertidal marine life. Across the water, the pink towers of the Chelsea Sugar Factory mark the horizon, while a sunken boat rests quietly in the flats.
