Honey hunting in Nepal is a time-honored tradition upheld by the Gurung and Magar communities in isolated villages such as Bhujung Pagan, Naya Gain, Ludhi, and Dare. For centuries, local residents have engaged in this perilous profession, risking their lives to collect wild honey without the aid of modern safety gear.
This distinctive practice occurs biannually, when expert honey hunters come together to extract honey from hives located on steep cliffs, some soaring up to 3,000 meters. Equipped with handmade bamboo ladders and ropes, they confront swarms of wild bees while hanging onto a single rope, often without any safety harnesses. Given the challenging conditions, proficiency in rock climbing and remarkable bravery are vital for those involved in this ancient and exhilarating tradition.
