What does it feel like to stand where three countries meet and nothing rises higher beneath your boots? In the far west of Mongolia, the Altai Tavan Bogd range lifts its ice-covered summits into a wide, wind-carved sky. This expedition leads you to Mount Khuiten (4,374 m), the highest point in Mongolia — a place of glaciers, silence, and raw mountain light.
Your journey begins in Ulaanbaatar before flying west to Ulgii and driving into the Tsagaan Gol Valley, home to Tuvan nomads. From there, you trek toward Base Camp beneath the vast 14 km Potanin Glacier. An acclimatization climb of Malchin Peak opens sweeping views toward Russia’s Belukha and the remote Ukok Plateau. Crossing moraine and glacier, you move to Advanced Base Camp, roped together for safety, preparing for summit day. The ascent of Khuiten requires crampons, ice axe, and steady focus — and rewards you with panoramic views across Mongolia, Russia, and China.
With experienced mountain guides, full logistics, pack animal support, and carefully planned acclimatization, the climb is challenging yet well supported. Evenings are spent in tented camps under sharp Altai stars; along the way you meet Kazakh and Tuvan families who share their traditions. If you’re ready to test yourself and stand on the roof of Mongolia, this mountain is waiting!
