Exploring Central Mongolia

This morning, we will take on a drive to the Khogno Khan Nature Reserve, located approximately 280 kilometers from Ulaanbaatar, the capital city. The reserve is home to the remarkable sand dune known as Elsen Tasarhai, where the landscape beautifully merges desert vistas, stunning mountains, flowing rivers, and lush grasslands.

Upon our arrival, we will explore the area, followed by an hour-long camel ride led by an experienced camel herder, allowing us to take in the breathtaking scenery.

Today, we will take a journey to the Ulaantsutgalan waterfall, which was designated a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 2005. This stunning location is home to many of Mongolia's ancient monuments.

The Orkhon waterfall, also known as UlaanTsutgalan, was created by a series of volcanic eruptions approximately 20,000 years ago. It plunges 22 meters down and spans 10 meters in width.

During our visit, we will meet a nomadic family, immerse ourselves in their way of life, and enjoy an hour of horse riding.

Today, we will take on a journey to Tuvkhun Monastery. Visitors will hike 5 km up the mountain to reach this serene site. The monastery was founded in 1648 by the young Zanabazar, who was just 14 years old at the time and later became the first Jebtsundamba Khutuktu Bogd. He discovered this picturesque location in 1651 and built a small wooden cabin for meditation, marking the inception of Tuvkhun Monastery. After our visit to the monastery, we will continue our drive to Kharkhorum, the ancient capital of the Great Mongolian Empire.

Kharkhorum served as the capital for only 40 years before Khubilai Khaan relocated it to Beijing. In the latter half of the 14th century, Chinese soldiers devastated much of the town. The remnants of Kharkhorum were later repurposed in the 16th century to construct ErdeneZuu Monastery, Mongolia's first Buddhist monastery. We will have the opportunity to explore the area and visit the museum.

In the morning, we will head to Uglii Lake, a freshwater lake located in eastern Arkhangai, central Mongolia. Recognized as a Ramsar Site of International Importance, the lake is renowned for its diverse fish and bird populations. It serves as a vital stopover for migrating waterfowl from the Anatidae family. Nearly half of the lake's depth is less than 3 meters.

You can enjoy swimming and fishing while you are there, so be sure to pack your swimsuit! For dinner tonight, we will indulge in a traditional Mongolian BBQ.

Today, we will be making our way back to Ulaanbaatar, stopping along the route to explore Hustai National Park. Nestled in the foothills of the northern Khentii mountain range, this park is home to the remarkable Takhi, also known as Przewalski horses, which are recognized worldwide.

These wild horses thrive in their natural habitat, having been successfully reintroduced to their homeland after being extinct for 40 years. Today, their population has exceeded 450 individuals. We will also have the opportunity to visit a local museum before settling in for the night at a tourist camp within Hustai National Park.

This morning, after enjoying breakfast at the camp, we will head back to Ulaanbaatar city.
