Rising majestically from the Great Rift Valley is the dormant volcano Mount Longonot, resembling a monolith. A distinctive aspect of this mountain is the dense forest located within its crater. The rim of the crater offers stunning panoramic views of the picturesque Rift Valley, extending to Lake Naivasha. Notable wildlife at Mount Longonot includes buffaloes, elands, leopards, bushbucks, common zebras, giraffes, and Grant’s gazelles. Additionally, Hell's Gate National Park, the only park in Kenya that offers various activities such as walking, hiking, horseback riding, biking, and game drives, is nearby. On your way to Nairobi, you can also choose to visit Lake Naivasha for a boat ride.

Route details
Hikers and nature enthusiasts should take the chance to ascend to the rim of Longonot (2886 m) in the Rift Valley, a relatively young, dormant volcano that showcases the typical characteristics of such mountains, even if it doesn't have a perfect conical form.
Start your journey from Nairobi early in the morning. Make a stop at the Rift Valley Viewpoint to marvel at the sights that earn it the name “The Great Rift Valley.” After admiring the Loita Plains, head to Mt. Longonot for a 5-hour hike around the crater and back down to the entrance. The trails leading up the mountain are steep, so it's advisable to wear comfortable hiking shoes and light clothing, and to carry drinking water. The hike offers an incredible experience from the crater's summit, where you may encounter various wildlife, including plains zebras, giraffes, African leopards, and elusive hartebeests.
At the end of the day, settle in at a permanent tented camp or lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.
