Experience the magic of winter in Orsiera Natural Park with this 3-day snowshoeing adventure near Turin. Immerse yourself in alpine silence, untouched snow, and the serene wilderness, far from crowded ski areas.

The hike includes an overnight stay at Orsiera Bivouac Hut (2000 m), a cozy 10-bed shelter with a wood stove. Wildlife sightings are frequent even in winter, including chamois, ibexes, and occasionally deer. Depending on conditions and participant energy, the second night may be spent in Balma Shelter (1986 m) or the more distant Avanzà Shelter near the French border.

This winter hike is perfect for adventurers seeking solitude, snow-covered forests, and panoramic views of the Susa Valley, Roman sites, and Orsiera peaks. Flexibility is key in winter trekking, but every step promises unforgettable alpine scenery.

Orsiera Bivouac Hut / Balma Hut

The Unguarded Hut is the more adventurous and suggestive option. It’s like a small one-room house in the middle of the mountains, usually located at more than 2,500 meters (about 8,000 feet). Moreover, it’s the cheapest option, so if you are hiking alone or want to limit costs, this will be the best choice. Most of the experienced trekkers who come with me, as well as young people on their first mountain adventure, often choose this option. It can also be a very nice experience for children, especially for a single night.

Sleeping in an unguarded hut is a bit like comfortable camping, but with the big advantage that all unguarded huts (bivacchi in Italian) have beds, blankets, and pillows. They usually also have a table where you can sit, play cards, and eat together.

In the unguarded hut, there is no toilet or shower, and you’ll need to bring your own sleeping bag. The food is usually cooked by me, but I’ll need your help to carry it up, as nothing is sold up there.
