Route details

Day 1
Tbilisi-Abano Pass-Omalo

Pickup will be at 6:00 AM in Tbilisi. The driving distance is approximately 190 km, taking around 6 hours. We will begin our journey early in the morning, heading east towards Kakheti, the wine region of Georgia. While many find the Gombori Pass entertaining, our real adventure will be on the road ahead. After passing the Alaverdi Cathedral and the village of Pshaveli, we will embark on a long and bumpy off-road journey, crossing the main Caucasus range at the Abano Pass, which rises to 2926 m – a route that seems almost impossible to navigate. Following a lunch break at the pass, we will descend into the valley on the other side of the ridge and eventually reach the village of Omalo, the largest settlement in the area.

Once there, we’ll explore both upper and lower Omalo, enjoying stunning views of Chagma Valley. We will also visit the Keselo Fortress and the ethnographic museum of Tusheti.

Overnight accommodations will be at a guesthouse in Omalo.
