The Tour of Thabor is one of the most fascinating multi-day hikes in the French Alps.
This itinerary travels through a quiet and remote region between the Haute-Alpes and the upper Nevache Valley, a place that still feels wild and untouched.
From the forests of Val Étroite to the mineral, moon-like landscapes above 2600 meters, this circuit offers a constant change of views, many mountain lakes, and a real sense of space. Compared with Italy, hikes in France tend to be longer but less steep, and this route reflects exactly that: long days, moderate gradients, and a steady rhythm.
A highlight of the trip is the summit of Thabor Peak (3148 m) on Day 2, a panoramic viewpoint over the whole area. The lodges are small and welcoming, and because of the remoteness, reservations must be made early.
Wildlife in the area includes marmots, chamois, roe deer and, with luck, ibex. The region is also known for its large alpine vultures, the Gyps, often seen circling the ridges.
